CanalPlus to close down CanalPlay service on 26 November
French broadcaster Canal Plus has informed customers that its CanalPlay SVoD service will close on 26 November, reports Universfreebox. The news was expected as the company had already hinted at a strategic repositioning of the offering last year. In July 2018, Canal Plus CEO Maxime Saada stated during a senate hearing that the CanalPlay subscriber base had fallen to 200,000 from a peak of 800,000, blaming the competitive disadvantage to Netflix arising from the broadcaster's regulatory obligations.
As the service struggled to hold on to customers, Canal Plus stopped promoting CanalPlay and decided to focus instead on the newer MyCanal application. In March, it announced a new EUR 6.99/month SVoD package for fans of TV series, with a catalogue of 5,000 episodes at launch.
This was followed in mid-September by a distribution partnership with Netflix, which has led to the introduction of a beefed-up version of the 'Cine Series' add-on. Available since 15 October, this new bundle can be accessed on multiple screens and includes Netflix's mid-tier 'Standard' subscription and over 20 thematic channels from partners such as OCS and Disney.
