Ethiopian first satellite launch goes ahead

Ethiopia launched its first satellite into space on 20 December from China, according to CIO East Africa. China covered most of the USD 8 million cost of the satellite, according to an anonymous official. Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen said the technological infrastructure is important even if it is delayed.

Ethiopian and Chinese officials and scientists gathered at the Entoto Observatory and Research Centre outside Addis Ababa to watch a live broadcast. It makes Ethiopia the eleventh African country to put a satellite into space and this was the eighth launch of an African satellite this year.
Forty-one African satellites have now been launched altogether, of which 38 were done by individual countries and three were multilateral efforts. None of the launches has been from African soil.
