Amazon: "We don't have to make money with the Champions League"

Amazon has underlined that the acquisition of the live rights of the UEFA Champions League is based on a mixed calculation.

"We don't have to earn money with the Champions League offer itself, we can do it with popcorn, beer or if someone buys shoes afterwards," Ralf Kleber, head of Amazon Deutschland, said at a Christmas get-together in Munich, reports German newspaper FAZ.
"We don't have to put all our weight on this asset. The Champions League gives us more commitment and more manoeuvring space on other fields," added Kleber.
From the 2020/21 season, Amazon will show Tuesday's top match of the Champions League in Germany, DAZN secured the Wednesday games and public broadcaster ZDF will show the highlights and the final. Sky Deutschland, the long-standing rights holder, ends up empty-handed.
Kleber did not yet want to say whether the Champions League will be free for Amazon Prime customers or whether an extra fee will be charged as "we still have to clarify a few issues with UEFA".
