Sky fined for unsolicited telemarketing in Germany

Sky Deutschland has received a fine from the Federal Networks Agency for unsolicited telemarketing. The regulator said the fine of EUR 250,000 follows several violations by the company and complaints from consumers.

Around 1,000 complaints were filed with the Bundesnetzagentur about the company advertising its pay-TV service to new prospective customers as well as in win-back campaigns for previous subscribers. Some consumers said they had asked not to be contacted, while the company did not have sufficient consent to contact others, after working through an external call centre that used internet competitions to obtain potential customer data.
The regulator found that Sky did not do enough to make sure it had the proper consent to call potential customers. The company admitted it had not processed requests to be removed from marketing lists in a prompt fashion.
Sky may appeal to the court in Bonn against the fine before it becomes final.
